Home renovations are expensive, and with the cost of everything going up, more and more homeowners and renters are looking to update their spaces without breaking the bank.
If you have a home project in mind, doing it yourself may be just what you need to make sure it gets done on budget. Whether you are a novice or an experienced DIY-er, resources like the DIY Training Centre are a great place to learn a new skill or find inspiration for your next big project. The centre has locations in Calgary and offers in-person and one-on-one classes where attendees can learn essential home renovation skills.
“Besides saving money, tackling your own DIY projects is like flexing your creativity muscles,” says Jackie White with the DIY Training Centre. “Completing a DIY project can instill a sense of pride and satisfaction, giving your confidence and morale a huge boost.”
Experts from the centre will be at the upcoming Calgary Home + Garden Show, running February 22–25 at the BMO Centre. The weekend expo is the perfect venue for would-be renovators and home design enthusiasts to learn about the biggest and brightest trends and resources on the market.
Ahead of this year’s event, Jackie is sharing her wisdom on how to get started with your next DIY.
Q: What are the best types of DIY projects for homeowners to take on?
“Painting walls is one of the easiest and most transformative DIY projects to refresh the look of a room or the exterior of a home. Installing shelving and storage also provides practical benefits and can enhance organization and space utilization.
If you are more adventurous, learning to do basic electrical or basic plumbing at a place like the DIY Training Centers, you can replace light fixtures or switches to really light up the place or ensure that your leaky faucets prevent water damage.”
Q: What kind of cost savings are associated with doing a DIY project instead of hiring a professional?
“By donning your DIY cape, you’re not just saving money, you’re practically making it rain in your wallet! Ok, that’s a slight exaggeration, but you are truly bidding farewell to hefty contractor and labour costs, which can significantly reduce your overall project expenses.
By adding in some bargain hunting for materials, like end-of-season sales, you can choose budget-friendly materials and supplies, further adding to your cost savings on your projects. And because you can work at your own pace, you can make adjustments where necessary to help your budget and avoid unexpected expenses.”
Q: What basic tools and know-how should a person have before starting a DIY project in their home?
“Every home improvement journey begins with a trusty toolkit. Think hammers, screwdrivers, tape measures, adjustable wrenches, pliers, level, utility knife and a cordless drill. Do not forget your safety glasses, gloves and dust masks to protect yourself as well.
Understanding basic skills in carpentry, plumbing and electrical — as well as following manufacturer instructions and safety guidelines — are critical for successful DIY projects. Be sure to educate yourself and get proper training before you start any DIY project. Remember, it’s all about measuring twice, cutting once and unleashing your inner Bob the Builder!
The DIY Training Center loves teaching homeowners the tricks of the trade to help them tackle home improvement projects of any size. Our in-person courses and one-on-one coaching provide homeowners with the skills they need to master the art of Do-It-Yourself.”
Q: What are some good DIY projects for renters?
“You can still add your personal flair to your space without ruffling any landlord feathers, but be sure to ask for permission before starting a DIY home project. You can paint some accent walls for a personal touch, or add some peel-and-stick tiles to a backsplash or bathroom. Changing out cabinet hardware will have an immediate effect on your space without making massive permanent alterations. You can also install removable shelving for extra storage or make your room pop with some peel-and-stick wallpaper.”
Q: When should someone call in the professionals instead of doing a DIY project?
“Sometimes, even DIY superheroes need backup! If your project involves structural alterations or intricate electrical work, plumbing or any HVAC, it’s best to hire professionals. I always say that safety and sanity are the first priority!”
Q: What do you think, other than saving money, are the biggest benefits of taking on a DIY home project?
“Doing it yourself allows you to personalize your space to suit your own preferences and unique style/ But learning to do it with your own two hands provides such valuable experience and knowledge that you can apply to future projects and everyday household repair and maintenance tasks.
